First off, huge shout out to the people at SXSW for allowing me to be an impromptu speaker at the Interactive event (Hilton Austin).  To be randomly recognized and asked to share a quick word was a huge honor that I was not expecting.  But a great opportunity to teach.

Being able to use social media as part of my job is a dream come true.  Since the days of Rocketmail (before the Yahoo merger), to MySpace to the crowded landscape of today (Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) - communicating via social media is a must-have skill in today's competitive media landscape.  So how do you a grow a small niche account into 20,000 followers?  How do you make a translator radio station compete with long-standing full blown signals?  Consistency.  Inclusion.  Unselfishness.  And again, consistency.

Success is not a 6 month plan, or one year plan.  We're talking 5+ years and more.  Anyone can do a good job for a short period of time.  Or with burst of excellence over a long amount of time.  Will they break out from the norm?  No.  Only with unbridaled enthusiasm, and consistency will you being to move the needle at all.

The unselfishness aspect is one of the key points.  Who cares about you?  If you're smart, you'll say 'no one'.  Who cares about themselves?  Everyone.  Target your content to showcase your audience.  It sounds simple, but you'd be surprised how many entreprenuers/business owners try to shine the social media spotlight on themselves.  I have found if you showcase your audience, you are more likely to build a loyal following.  Instead of tweeting about your food, showcase someon enjoying your food.  Instead of showcasing members of your team at an event, instead highlight the common man at your event.  

Birthday shout outs are a great way to accomplish this.  You are showcasing someone your crew cares about, without shining a direct light on yourself.  Those who are not interested in your brand initially, may take to heart that you are all about their friend/family member/associate, thus making it more likely for them to 'like' or 'retweet' your post.  I'm not going to go long winded in this blog - but just food for thought.  Think about others, before yourself.  If you can figure out a compelling way to do this, you have taken the first step in a long journey towards social media success.  The success doesn't come immediately either.  Keep that in mind, and be unrelenting consistent with what you are doing.  Even if no one likes your posts for a year, 2 years, 3 years.  Keep at it.
